Our Second Chance Rooster Program

At Wise County Chicken Farm, we believe every animal has value—including the often-overlooked rooster. That’s why we created the Second Chance Rooster Program, a mission-driven effort to help rehome unwanted or extra roosters with responsible, caring keepers.

Whether you’re looking to rehome a rooster or adopt one for your flock, this program is about giving good birds a real opportunity at a better life.

🌟 Why We Started the Program

Roosters are a natural part of raising chickens, but they’re often culled, abandoned, or discarded when they’re no longer needed or when flock dynamics change.

We saw too many well-raised birds facing poor outcomes simply because they were born male—and we decided to do something about it.

💛 Our goal is simple: give roosters a safe place and a real second chance in the right environment.

🧪 What Happens When a Rooster Enters Our Program

Every rooster accepted into our program goes through an intake and evaluation process to support both his health and the safety of the flock.

Each rooster is:

  • Visually checked for signs of illness or injury
  • Treated as needed (mites, lice, deworming)
  • Evaluated for behavior and temperament
  • Quarantined to monitor for stress or underlying health concerns

After this period, roosters are carefully integrated and maintained in a structured environment while they await placement.

🐓 Rehoming a Rooster

If you have a rooster you can no longer keep—due to ordinances, flock dynamics, or simply too many birds—we may be able to help.

What we require:

  • A clear description of breed, age, and temperament
  • Honest disclosure of any aggression toward humans or animals
  • Photos (when possible; may also be used for placement)
  • Confirmation the bird shows no visible signs of illness or injury

We accept both calm and aggressive roosters, but accurate and honest information is essential so we can responsibly match each bird with the right home.

👉 Roosters must be standard size breeds (no Bantams at this time).

🐣 Roosters Under 6 Months Old

Younger roosters require separate housing for safety and proper development before they can be integrated with mature birds.

If you’re able to keep your rooster until he reaches 6 months of age, we’re happy to accept him at that time at no charge.

Roosters under 6 months old can still be accepted, but a $15 fee per bird applies to help cover the additional care required during their stay.

Most younger roosters remain in our program until they’re mature enough to be responsibly rehomed. Placement is handled on a case-by-case basis to ensure the best outcome for each bird.

🐥 Looking Ahead: Bantam Roosters

While we currently only accept standard-size roosters, we recognize that Bantam breeds also deserve second chances.

By the end of 2026, we plan to expand and create dedicated housing specifically for Bantam roosters. This will allow us to safely accommodate smaller birds without risk.

More details will be shared as that project develops.

🏡 Adopting a Rooster

Looking for a flock protector or breeding companion? We often have a variety of roosters available—young and mature, heritage and hybrid—each with their own personality.

What you can expect:

  • A healthy, evaluated rooster
  • Honest insight into temperament and background
  • Guidance on safe flock integration

Our goal is to help you find the right fit for your flock—not just place a bird.

🛑 If It Doesn’t Work Out

We understand that not every rooster will fit every situation.

If you adopt a rooster through our program and it doesn’t work out, please contact us rather than rehoming him elsewhere or turning him loose.

We will gladly take him back—no judgment, no hassle.

That’s part of our commitment to both the birds and the people who trust us.

🌱 Why It Matters

Roosters play an important role in flock dynamics, protection, and natural behavior—but they also deserve proper care and respect.

By participating in this program, you’re helping reduce unnecessary culling and supporting more responsible poultry keeping.

🌱 Whether you’re rehoming or adopting, you’re making a difference.

💕 Supporting the Program

While Wise County Chicken Farm is not currently a registered 501(c)(3), this program is built on time, resources, and a commitment to doing things the right way.

Each rooster receives proper care, housing, and attention—and community support helps make that possible.

Ways to Help:

  • Monetary donations (feed, care, upkeep)
  • Feed (20% protein layer pellets)
  • Flock blocks, scratch, or treats
  • Coop materials, fencing, or upgrades
  • Poultry health supplies (grit, treatments, electrolytes, etc.)

Every contribution goes directly toward the care of the roosters.

🐓 Final Thoughts

Not every rooster fits every home—but every rooster deserves a chance.

If you’ve got too many boys or a flock in need of leadership, the Second Chance Rooster Program may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Thank you for helping us give these birds a better shot at life.
