The Black Australorp breed of chicken originated from Australia. The became well known as setting multiple world records for the number of eggs laid per year per hen back in the 1920's. Black Australorps were originally known as Black Orpingtons. The breed is known to be good nest sitters and good mothers and remains one of the most popular breeds of heritage chickens available today. 

Australorps can come in a variety of colors, not just black. Some may be wheaten, buff, or gold laced.
