The Black Jersey Giant is the largest purebred chicken in the US and quite possible the world! Brahmas are the only other breed that comes close to the size. It has a moderate to long body that is both wide and deep. They develop a green sheen over their black plumage as their adult feathers grow in. They are good cold-tolerant breeds and do well in heat with proper shade and ventilation. Despite their size, they are gentle and docile and generally good with children. They are easy to handle, not very flighty and not easy prey for hawks because of their size. They do stand out in meat production being as large as they are.
