The French Pearl Guinea is often raised for meat and can weigh about 2 lbs more than other guinea fowl. They are in high demand in resturaunts because of their tender, lean meat. They are the "Watch Dogs" of the poultry world. They help tremendously with insect population reduction, especially with ticks!
Guineas have been known to be vigorous, hardy and largely disease-free birds. They do a great job at sounding an alarm whenever anything unusual occurs on the farm. Some people can find this nuisancey, while others find it to be an effective tool for protecting the farmyard. Guineas are known to kill and eat mice, small rats, snakes, control insects like grasshoppers, ticks, flies and crickets. They can also be raised for meat and egg production as well.
It is lean and rich in amino acids. Guineas require little oversight to survive. They are often suitable to left to fend for themselves. They can fly at a very early age, so it's important to allow them to acclimate to their new environment for a couple of weeks before allowing them out to roam. Most guineas are able to meet most of their nutritional requirements on their own, so you don't have to worry too much about feeding them, although, it's recommended that a complete feed be offered as free choice, should they want it.
