The Barnevelder originated from England. They are thought to be a mixed breed of Langshans, Malaysia, Brahmas, and Gold Laced Wyandottes. They were standardized as a breed back in 1923 and bred to supply Europe with brown shelled eggs.

They have a beautiful pattern on their feathers with a double lacing / black effect to produce the "arrowhead" effect. Roosters do not have the same patterning as females.

They come in a variety of colors, including double laced silver, double laced blue, black and gold, chamois, silver blue and white. The double laced Barnevelder was recognized by The American Poultry Association in 1991 as 'continental'.

They are known to lay through winter months, making them popular among families. Hens are not known to be particularly broody, so incubating eggs is important if really looking to reproduce.

They are very easy going birds, rarely causing any issues in any flock. They are quiet compared to other chickens but known for being chatter boxes and talking to you in a low voice. They are active and love being free range but will tolerate confinment. They have minimal health issues but do require lots of shade during hot summer months.
