The Barred Plymouth Rock Chicken is one of America's oldest breeds of chickens. It was the nation's main source of meat and eggs back during World War 2. It is a great dual-purpose breed, with good quality meat and good egg production. It easily rivals the Rhode Island Red. Barred Rocks are similar to Dominique chickens, the main difference being the Barred Rock has a single comb vs a rose comb.
Barred Rocks can come in different colors; Barred, Blue, Buff, Colombian, Partridge, Silver penciled, and White. All the colors are considered rare except the Barred and the White. These chickens make good sitters and great moms when you encourage a hen to go broody. Chicks feather out quickly, usually by 8 to 12 weeks. This breed gets along well with everyone generally. Most people who have owned them describe them as sweet, calm, and docile. Most barred rocks will live for 10-12 years if cared for.
