One of the most frequent questions we get here at Wise County Chicken Farm is some variation of: "Is my water okay for my birds?" Itâs a great question. Water is the most critical nutrient for poultry, a chicken will typically drink about twice as much as it eats by weight. If they don't like the taste, or if the mineral balance is off, their health and egg production can take a nose-dive faster than a hawk on a field mouse.
In our neck of the woods, we mostly deal with two sources: city-treated tap water and private well water. Both have their pros and cons, but understanding whatâs in those pipes is the first step to a thriving, happy flock.
For many folks, tap water is the default. Itâs convenient, regulated, and generally safe for human consumption, which makes it a safe bet for your chickens too.
Most city water contains chlorine (to kill bacteria) and fluoride. While some old-school keepers worry about these additives, most modern poultry science suggests that at the levels found in municipal drinking water, they aren't harmful to chickens. In fact, that tiny bit of chlorine can actually help keep the slime and algae (the "biofilm") from growing quite as fast in your waterers.
However, even "city water" in Texas can be quite hard. Many of our municipal systems draw from groundwater sources that are naturally high in minerals. If you notice a white, rubbery or crusty buildup on your faucets, your chickens are drinking that same mineral-heavy water. While it's usually safe, it can be tough on your equipment.

If youâre living the homestead life out here, youâre likely pulling from a well. Well water is wonderful because itâs free of city chemicals, but itâs a bit of a "wild west" because it isn't regulated by the government.
Bottom Line: If you drink your well water and it has passed a safety test, your chickens can usually drink it too. But "clean-looking" water can hide some invisible troublemakers.
TDS is a measure of everything dissolved in your water: minerals, salts, and metals. For chickens, the TDS level is a huge indicator of water quality:
If your well water is high in TDS, it can cause "flushing" (diarrhea), which leads to wet litter. Wet litter is a breeding ground for nasty things like coccidia, so keeping that water balance right is about more than just thirst!
In Texas, our water is often "hard," meaning it's packed with calcium and magnesium. By itself, hardness isn't usually a health hazard for birds. In fact, they need calcium for those strong eggshells! The problem arises when these minerals pair up with others.
If your well water has high Magnesium (Mg) combined with high Sulfates (SOâ), it acts like a natural laxative. Your birds will have loose, foul-smelling droppings, and theyâll struggle to stay hydrated because the water is moving through them too fast.
Signs of Mineral Imbalance:

If your home has a water softener, you might wonder if that "salty" water is safe. Most softeners replace calcium with a tiny amount of sodium. For humans, it's negligible. For chickens, it's usually fine unless your water was extremely hard to begin with.
Tip: If your water test shows Sodium (Na) levels above 50 mg/L, you should avoid using softened water for your flock, as excess salt can lead to kidney issues and wet litter.
No matter where your water comes from, how you manage it at the coop is what really matters.
Ask yourself: âWould I take a sip of this?â If the water is warm, slimy, or has a stray feather floating in it, dump it! Chickens prefer cool water (around 50-60°F). In our Texas summers, water can reach 90°F in the sun, making it a perfect soup for bacteria.
Algae and bacteria love waterers. We highly recommend using a supplement like Acidified Copper Sulfate to help keep those water lines clean and discourage the growth of E. coli and Clostridium. It also helps balance the pH of alkaline well water, making it more palatable for your girls.
During those triple-digit heat waves, or when youâre bringing new pullets home, their bodies lose minerals fast. We keep Merrickâs Blue Ribbon Poultry Electrolytes on hand at all times. A quick boost of electrolytes and probiotics can be the difference between a bird that thrives and one that wilts in the heat.

If you use additives like Acidified Copper Sulfate, avoid metal waterers. The copper will react with the metal and corrode it. Stick to high-quality plastic or rubber waterers for all your supplemented water.
