Why Start with 6 Hens?
Chickens are flock animals — they thrive in groups. Six is the perfect starter number: big enough for companionship, yet manageable for beginners.
Why Choose Texas Red Laying Hens?
If you’re new to poultry or returning after a break, Texas Reds are one of the best breeds to begin with. They’re:
- Docile & Easy to Handle — great for first-time keepers
- Heat-Tolerant & Hardy — well suited for Texas weather
- At Laying Age — no brooder setup or chick-raising required
Eggs & Expectations
Most hens begin laying between the same week of pickup and up to six weeks later. Timing depends on factors like stress, sunlight, weather, and nutrition. With proper care (16 hours of daylight, good feed, and a stress-free home), you can expect an average of 5 eggs per hen per week.
Why Not Start with Chicks?
Chicks are rewarding but require more equipment, experience, and time. These mostly grown hens let you skip the brooder stage and jump straight into the joy of gathering eggs.
Our Advice
Raise your first flock of Texas Reds through all four seasons to learn the rhythm of poultry keeping. Once you’re comfortable, you can expand into other breeds for different egg colors, feather patterns, or special traits.
Not all chickens are created equal — some are ornamental, some are broody, some are laying machines. Our Texas Red Laying Hens are bred to meet the everyday needs of families who want fresh eggs and friendly birds.
